Justifications of answers

Question 1      Answer C

We need to calculate how many tickets sold in 2005 cost less than (<) £169.00

Therefore we count the amount from each price range below £169.00

12 + 34 + 12 + 129 = 187.

The number of tickets are shown in the table as 000’s, therefore the answer is 187000.

Question 2      Answer C

We need to calculate how many tickets sold in 2005 and 2006 cost more than £190.00

Therefore we add together the amount from each price range (for2005 and 2006) > £190.00

32 + 123 (in 2005) =155

43 +12 (in 2006) = 55

155 + 55 = 210

The number of tickets are shown in the table as 000’s, therefore the answer is 210000

Question 3      Answer B

The question is asking you to calculate the mean number or the average number of tickets sold within each price range in 2006.

Therefore we add up how many tickets there in each price range, and divide this by the 8 categories.

(89 + 987 + 123 + 12 + 24 + 56 + 43 + 12) ÷ 8 = 168.25
                                                                            = 168000 (to the nearest 000)

Question 4      Answer C

In 2005 32000 tickets were sold between the prices of £190.00 and £199.00
In 2006 43000 tickets were sold between the prices of £190.00 and £199.00

Step 1

We first find out the difference between the two totals:

43000 – 32000 = 11000

Therefore in 2006 the tickets increased by 11000.

Step 2

We now need to work out the above total as a percentage:

(11000 ÷ 32000) x 100 = 34.4 % (to 1 decimal place).
