Career Paths Within Medicine

Following your early medical training you can follow a path to one of many specialties, from working in a hospital as a surgeon, to working as a GP based within the community. There is a whole spectrum of areas you can specialise in, with a range of sub-specialties. For example, Cardiology and Oncology are sub-specialties of Medicine. There are over 50 different specialties and after entering any field you will need to take post-graduate examinations in order to register as a member of the appropriate Royal College and go into practice. There are fourteen different colleges covering all specialties. Here are the links to each Royal College website so you can examine potential areas of interest in more detail:

Another website which you may find useful when researching various specialties is the British Medical Association; click here to view this website.

For more information on how we can help you decide on whether a career, in medicine, is right for you and what steps you can take to participate in the right work experience and cross-curricular activities please click here.
